ADHD in Adults
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

What is ADHD
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a disorder characterized by inattention and hyperactivity.
It is not just a childhood diagnosis—it persists into adulthood and can impact daily life.
In adults, ADHD often manifests in various ways, not just hyperactivity. It can include issues with concentration, impulsivity, emotional instability, and difficulties with organization.
What are types of ADHD
There are 3 main types of ADHD:
- Hyperactive-Impulsive Type
Excessive physical or internal activity, impulsive behavior. - Inattentive Type
Difficulty with concentration, organization, and memory. - Combined Type
Symptoms of both of the above types.
Problematic Areas in ADHD
- Concentration Issues – Difficulty maintaining focus on important tasks.
- Impulsivity – Acting without thinking, which can lead to poor decisions.
- Emotional Instability – Rapid mood changes, sensitivity to criticism.
- Procrastination – Delaying tasks and struggles with completing assignments.
- Organizational Difficulties – Chaos in planning, losing things, missing deadlines.
- Indecisiveness – Difficulty choosing between options and completing decisions.
- Relationship Issues – Forgetting important events, interrupting conversations.
- Inner Restlessness – A constant sense of tension, need for movement.
- Low Self-Discipline – Difficulty sticking to routines and long-term plans.
- Information Overload – Struggling to process large amounts of stimuli at once.
How ADHD Manifests
ADHD affects three main areas of our functioning:
MIND, EMOTIONS and BODY
- ADHD and the Mind – Constant Flow of Thoughts
People with ADHD have a fast-moving mind that jumps from one thought to another. This can be an advantage in creative thinking but also causes issues with concentration and organization.
- Inattention – Difficulty focusing on tasks, forgetting things, easily distracted by surroundings.
- Hyperfocus – Extreme concentration on something interesting, while everything else fades into the background.
- Forgetfulness – Losing things, missing deadlines, not tracking important information.
- Organizational Chaos – Difficulty planning and completing tasks.
- ADHD and Emotions – Intense Emotional Experience
Emotional regulation is challenging for people with ADHD. Their reactions can be intense, rapid, and not always appropriate to the situation.
- Sudden Mood Swings – From excitement to frustration in a short period of time.
- Impulsive Reactions – Emotional responses without considering the consequences.
- High Sensitivity – To external stimuli and the emotions of others.
- Feeling Overwhelmed – Frustration from unfinished tasks and inner chaos.
- ADHD and the Body – Constant Need for Movement
Hyperactivity in adults may not only show up as visible restlessness but also as inner unease.
- Difficulty Sitting Still – The need to move, fiddling with objects.
- Need for Physical Activity – A compulsion to release energy through movement.
- Problems with Relaxation – Feeling that “doing nothing” is a waste of time.
- Impulsive Movements – Quick gestures, interrupting conversations.
How to Cope with ADHD
ADHD is a Unique Brain Configuration
When we understand and accept ADHD, we can create strategies that help us function effectively and achieve positive results with our unique way of thinking and being.
However, if ADHD causes difficulties in everyday life—such as trouble focusing, difficulty maintaining relationships, frequent lateness, impulsive decisions, emotional outbursts, feelings of being overwhelmed, or chronic procrastination—it’s important to recognize your options.
A key step is ADHD diagnosis, followed by a combination of appropriate treatment and support. Treatment may include medication, physical approaches, as well as non-medical methods such as coaching and body work.
Coaching helps individuals better understand and accept themselves, while also offering new strategies and ways to effectively utilize their unique mental setup and way of functioning.
ADHD is not a failure. When we learn to properly direct our energy, it can become one of our greatest strengths.
